A young Indian woman who had moved to Canada in search of employment was found dead in Toronto, sending shockwaves through the Indian community. The victim, identified as Himanshi Khurana (30), was murdered at her residence in Toronto. Police have named a 32-year-old man, Abdul Gapuri, as the prime suspect and have issued a nationwide arrest warrant to trace him.
According to police, a missing person complaint was filed late on Friday night (December 19) after Himanshi could not be contacted. Acting on the complaint, officers launched a search and, in the early hours of Saturday, discovered her body at a residence in the Strachan Avenue area. Authorities have confirmed that her death was a homicide and are treating the case as suspected “intimate partner violence.”
Police stated that the accused, Abdul Gapuri, was known to the victim. A case has been registered against him under charges of first-degree murder. If convicted, he could face life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The suspect is currently absconding, and efforts are underway to locate and arrest him.
The tragic killing has drawn strong reactions, including from the Indian diplomatic mission in Toronto. The Indian Consulate expressed deep shock and grief over the incident and conveyed its heartfelt condolences to Himanshi Khurana’s family.
In a statement shared on social media, the Consulate said, “We are deeply saddened by the news of the murder of Indian national Himanshi Khurana. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time. We are in constant touch with local authorities and are extending all possible assistance to the bereaved family.”
The incident has once again raised concerns about the safety of immigrants and the issue of domestic and intimate partner violence abroad, prompting calls for swift justice and stronger protective measures.
