Hyderabad – Several parts of Kamareddy and Medak districts in Telangana remained submerged on Friday following relentless rainfall, even as authorities ramped up relief and rescue operations. Heavy rains continued to batter north Telangana, disrupting normal life and damaging key infrastructure.
Floodwaters from the Pocharam irrigation project swept away a section of the Medak-Yellareddy highway, halting vehicular movement. A major rescue operation was launched by the Indian Army to save eight individuals trapped after a portion of the bridge collapsed due to the deluge.
In another incident, a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team successfully rescued eight people who were stranded in floodwaters from the Manjira River in Nizamabad district.
NH-44 Traffic Paralyzed
A 15-kilometre traffic jam was reported along National Highway 44 (Hyderabad–Nagpur route) in Kamareddy district, particularly from Sadashivnagar mandal to Bhiknoor, as sections of the road sustained flood-related damage. Vehicles were moving at a snail’s pace, while police personnel, under the supervision of District SP Rajesh Chandra, were managing traffic and coordinating emergency response efforts.
As a precaution, educational institutions in Medak and Kamareddy districts were closed for the second consecutive day.
Reservoirs Brimming, Gates Opened
The persistent downpour has resulted in massive inflows into major reservoirs:
Nizamsagar project received 1.63 lakh cusecs of inflows. Authorities opened 23 gates to discharge 1.67 lakh cusecs downstream. The water level reached 1,402.92 feet, just shy of its full reservoir level (FRL) of 1,405 feet.
Sriram Sagar project saw 4.30 lakh cusecs of inflow. Officials lifted 39 gates to release 5.04 lakh cusecs. Water storage reached 65.13 TMC, approaching its full capacity of 80.5 TMC.
Sirpad Yellampalli project was receiving 6.76 lakh cusecs, with 6.52 lakh cusecs being discharged downstream.
Godavari River Rising
In Mulugu district, the Godavari River crossed its first danger mark at Ramannagudem in Eturanagaram mandal, with water levels reaching 14.83 meters. Officials are bracing for further rise in water levels, with District Collector urging all flood-duty officers to remain on high alert and be ready for immediate response.
IMD Issues Red Alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on Friday and Saturday across northern Telangana. A Red Alert has been issued for Kamareddy and Nizamabad districts, while an Orange Alert is in place for Medak, and the former Adilabad and Karimnagar districts.
Authorities have urged residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and follow official advisories. Relief camps have been set up, and emergency services are on standby across affected regions.
