Hyderabad — Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh is set to take oath as the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court on Saturday, following his transfer from the Tripura High Court. The appointment follows a recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium on May 28, and was officially approved by the Union Government earlier this week.
Justice Singh will succeed Justice Sujoy Paul, who has been transferred to the Calcutta High Court as part of a broader judicial reshuffle involving multiple High Court Chief Justices across the country.
Justice Singh was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court on April 17, 2023, and previously served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court between December 2022 and February 2023.
A Judicial Legacy
Born on July 7, 1965, Justice Singh is an alumnus of the University of Delhi, where he earned a BA Honours and LLB degree. He hails from a family with a distinguished judicial legacy—his maternal great-grandfather, B.P. Sinha, served as the sixth Chief Justice of India.
Justice Singh began his legal practice in 1990 at the Patna High Court, where he practiced for a decade. With the establishment of the Jharkhand High Court in 2001, he continued his legal career there and eventually transitioned to the Bench.
He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Jharkhand High Court on January 24, 2012, and was confirmed as a permanent judge on January 16, 2014. In April 2021, he took over as the Executive Chairman of the Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority, actively contributing to legal aid and judicial outreach initiatives.
National-Level Judicial Reshuffle
Justice Singh’s appointment is part of a significant reshuffle of High Court leadership across the country:
Justice K.R. Shriram, Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, has been transferred to the Rajasthan High Court.
Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava, Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court, will now head the Madras High Court.
Justice M.S. Ramachandra Rao, Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court, has been transferred to the Tripura High Court, taking Justice Singh’s place.
The reshuffle aims to ensure balanced leadership and administrative continuity across the judiciary, in line with the Collegium’s recommendations.
Justice Singh is expected to bring his wide-ranging legal and judicial experience to the Telangana High Court, which is currently handling a number of high-profile and constitutionally significant cases.
