Terrorist Neutralised in Ganderbal Operation, Search Continues

In a significant development from Jammu and Kashmir, security forces have eliminated one terrorist following a prolonged encounter in the forested Arahama area of Ganderbal. The operation, which began on Tuesday evening, remains ongoing as forces continue to comb the dense woods for additional threats.

Overnight Gunfight and Tactical Response

The gunfight erupted after intelligence inputs indicated the presence of militants hiding in the Arahama forests. A joint team comprising the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Central Reserve Police Force swiftly launched a cordon-and-search operation, codenamed ‘Operation Arahama’.

As the search intensified, militants opened fire, triggering a fierce exchange. According to officials, security forces tactically reorganised their positions overnight amid intermittent firing.

“During the night, the cordon was restructured strategically. Troops responded effectively with calibrated force, resulting in the elimination of one terrorist. The operation is still in progress,” the Army said in a statement.

Hunt for Remaining Militants

Sources suggest that at least two terrorists were believed to be trapped in the area when the encounter began. With one now neutralised, forces are maintaining a tight cordon, supported by reinforcements rushed to the site.

The dense terrain and forest cover have made the operation particularly challenging, but officials remain confident of further success as the search continues.

Rising Vigil Along LoC

This latest encounter comes amid heightened alertness across the Kashmir Valley. Earlier incidents underline the persistent threat of infiltration:

  • On March 14, one Pakistani terrorist was killed while attempting to infiltrate along the Line of Control in Uri, located in Baramulla.
  • Days earlier, on March 10, another militant was neutralised in the Nowshera sector of Rajouri during a similar infiltration attempt.

A District Once Considered Stable

Notably, Ganderbal had remained largely free of terrorist activity for over a year, making this encounter particularly concerning for security agencies.

The district was last shaken on October 20, 2024, when terrorists attacked a workers’ camp in the Gagangir area near the strategically important Sonamarg Z-Morh tunnel project. The brutal assault claimed the lives of six non-local labourers and a local doctor, leaving several others injured and raising serious security concerns.

What Lies Ahead

As “Operation Arahama” continues, security forces are focused on ensuring the complete sanitisation of the area. Officials have urged vigilance, noting that even isolated incidents can signal attempts to revive militant networks in previously stable zones.

For now, all eyes remain on the unfolding operation in Ganderbal—an evolving reminder of the fragile security landscape in Kashmir.
