Irrigation Canal Turning Into a Dumping Yard?

  • Vattigedda Reservoir 5th Branch Canal Neglected by Authorities

AP-Parvathipuram- Jiyyammavalasa : An irrigation canal that is meant to support farmers has now turned into a dumping ground due to official negligence and lack of monitoring. The 5th branch main canal of the Vattigedda Reservoir, located in Ravada village of Jiyyammavalasa mandal in Parvathipuram Manyam district, is currently filled with garbage, resembling a dumping yard.

At Pedamerangi center, the culvert has been completely clogged with waste, severely disrupting the flow of irrigation water. Plastic waste and household garbage have accumulated, blocking water supply to agricultural fields.

This canal is highly crucial as it supplies water directly to Gauri Sagaram tank, which in turn irrigates thousands of acres across villages like Pedamerangi, Gavarampeta, Venkatapuram, Basingi, Chintala Belagam, and Gijaba. However, due to the current condition, farmers are facing serious difficulties.

Farmers also use the canal bund as a primary pathway to access their fields. Over time, indiscriminate dumping of waste has led to severe foul smell, making it difficult for them to pass through.
“We are forced to cover our noses just to reach our fields. This unhygienic condition is causing health issues,” farmers complained.

On one hand, they are deprived of irrigation water, and on the other, they are suffering from unbearable stench—making life miserable for the farming community.

Authorities Must Respond
Farmers are urging irrigation officials to respond immediately. They demand that the accumulated silt and garbage be cleared on a war footing. Strict action should be taken against those dumping waste into irrigation canals, and warning boards must be installed to prevent such activities in the future.
