Hyderabad: The ruling Congress party has created a wave in the municipal elections held across Telangana. In the vote counting conducted on Friday, the party established a clear lead, proving that urban voters in the state have strongly backed it. The results have sparked fresh political discussions across the state.
Out of a total of 116 municipalities, Congress secured victory in 62, marking a decisive performance. The main opposition party, BRS, managed to win only 12 municipalities. The Forward Bloc captured one municipality, while results in four municipalities are yet to be declared.
One of the most interesting aspects of these elections is the large number of hung municipalities. Around 37 municipalities delivered no clear majority to any single party, leading to intense competition for the posts of Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson. Both Congress and BRS have reportedly initiated efforts to gain the support of independents and smaller parties, triggering political maneuvering that is expected to heat up in the coming days.
In addition to municipalities, Congress also performed strongly in seven municipal corporations. The party secured a clear majority in Mancherial, Ramagundam, and Nalgonda corporations, and is leading in Mahabubnagar. In Kothagudem Corporation, Congress and CPI won 22 seats each, resulting in a tie.
Meanwhile, the BJP showed strength in Nizamabad and Karimnagar corporations, both considered its strongholds and currently represented by BJP MPs in the Lok Sabha.
Ward-wise results show that out of 2,582 municipal wards, results for 2,543 had been declared by 4:30 PM on Friday. Congress won 1,325 wards, BRS secured 707, BJP won 260, while AIMIM and Independents together claimed 251 wards.
In the corporations, out of 414 divisions, results for 291 were declared. Congress won 154 divisions, BRS 49, BJP 34, and others 54.
The polling, held on Wednesday, recorded over 73 percent voter turnout. Municipalities registered 75.88 percent polling, while corporations recorded 66.05 percent, reflecting strong urban voter participation.
The notification for the election of Municipal Chairpersons and Mayors will be issued on Saturday. Newly elected councillors and corporators will take oath on February 16 (Monday), and elections for Chairpersons, Vice-Chairpersons, Mayors, and Deputy Mayors will be conducted the same day.
With this decisive mandate, Congress has significantly strengthened its position in Telangana’s urban political landscape.
