Washington: US President Donald Trump has announced a major decision impacting global trade, declaring an increase in tariffs on worldwide imports from 10 per cent to 15 per cent. The hike will take immediate effect.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said the decision was taken after reviewing a recent ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States.
“For decades, many countries have taken advantage of the United States. No one fought back until I came along,” Trump wrote. He sharply criticised the Supreme Court’s verdict on tariffs delivered on Friday, calling it “absurd and anti-American.”
Trump stated that after careful consideration of the judgment, he decided to raise the global tariff rate to 15 per cent, asserting that the move is “fully legal.” He also indicated that additional tariffs could be introduced in the coming months as part of his “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) agenda.
The announcement comes at a time when the Supreme Court’s ruling was seen as a setback to Trump’s trade policies. However, the President appears determined to pursue alternative legal avenues to advance his tariff strategy. Analysts say the move could have significant implications for global trade, commodity prices, and US relations with other nations.
