‘I Am With You’: PM Modi Visits Manipur, Meets Violence Victims, Calls for Peace

Imphal, September 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Manipur on Saturday for the first time since ethnic violence erupted in the state in May 2023, expressing solidarity with those affected and calling for peace and reconciliation.

Despite heavy rains, the Prime Minister travelled by road to Kuki-dominated Churachandpur after landing in Imphal around noon. There, he met with people displaced by the conflict and inaugurated a slew of development projects worth over ₹7,300 crore aimed at rebuilding and revitalizing the state.

“The Centre stands in solidarity with the people of Manipur,” Modi declared during his address. “For development to take place anywhere, peace is essential along with truth and justice.”

Major Development Projects Unveiled

During his visit, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for several key projects, including:

  • Manipur Urban Roads, Drainage and Asset Management Improvement Project worth over ₹3,600 crore

  • Five National Highway projects valued at more than ₹2,500 crore

  • Manipur Infotech Development (MIND) Project worth ₹550 crore

  • Working Women Hostels at nine locations

  • New Manipur Police Headquarters in Imphal at a cost of ₹101 crore

  • Civil Secretariat in Imphal, built at ₹538 crore

“These initiatives will particularly benefit tribal communities in the hill districts,” the Prime Minister noted, adding that the projects will enhance access to health, education, and infrastructure.

Call for Peace and Reconciliation

Addressing the ongoing conflict between the Kuki and Meitei communities, Modi urged all organisations to come together on the path of peace.

“This land once held hope and dreams, but it was also caught in the grip of violence,” he said. “Recently, dialogues have started between the hills and valleys. The Indian government is actively supporting this process, prioritising dialogue, respect, and social harmony.”

He announced that nearly 7,000 new homes are being built for displaced families and promised continued support from the Centre.

“Today, I promise you that I am with you. The Government of India is with you, and the people of Manipur are together,” Modi assured.

Rs 3,000 Crore Special Package Announced

The Prime Minister also unveiled a special assistance package worth ₹3,000 crore, including ₹500 crore specifically for the rehabilitation of those displaced by the violence.

“Development of every tribal community is a national priority,” Modi said, highlighting the government’s commitment to inclusive growth.

Tight Security Measures in Place

Ahead of the high-profile visit, security was significantly tightened in both Imphal and Churachandpur. Central and state forces were deployed in large numbers at key locations, including the 237-acre Kangla Fort and the Peace Ground, where Modi held public events.

Opposition Criticises Delay in Visit

The Prime Minister’s visit comes after months of criticism from opposition leaders for not visiting the violence-hit state sooner. Since the outbreak of ethnic clashes in May 2023, more than 260 people have lost their lives, and thousands remain displaced.

Reacting to the visit, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra stated, “I’m glad he has finally decided to visit after two years. But it is unfortunate that he allowed this situation to continue for so long, with so many lives lost and so much suffering.”

While the visit marks a significant political and developmental move, the road to lasting peace and stability in Manipur remains complex and deeply rooted in the ethnic tensions that have long divided the region.
