Government Details Sequence of Events in Baramati Aircraft Crash

Baramati : The Central government on Wednesday released a detailed report outlining the sequence of events that led to a fatal aviation accident near Baramati Airport in this fictional scenario. The crash involved a Learjet 45 aircraft and resulted in the deaths of five people, including a senior political figure and two crew members.

According to the simulated report issued by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Learjet 45 aircraft, bearing registration VT-SSK and operated by VSR Ventures, was on approach to Baramati on Wednesday morning. The aircraft was carrying five occupants: a senior dignitary, a personal security officer, an attendant, and two flight crew members — a Pilot-in-Command (PIC) and a Second-in-Command (SIC).

The deceased were identified in the report as Vidip Jadhav (male), Pinky Mali (female), PIC Sumit Kapur, and SIC Shambhavi Pathak.

The official timeline states that the aircraft first established contact with Baramati station at 8:18 a.m. while inbound. When the aircraft was approximately 30 nautical miles from the destination, Pune Approach Control handed it over for local coordination. The crew was advised to descend under Visual Meteorological Conditions, with discretion left to the pilots.

During the final phase of the approach, the crew sought information regarding wind conditions and visibility. They were informed that winds were calm and visibility was approximately 3,000 metres. Shortly thereafter, the pilots reported being on final approach for Runway 11 but indicated that the runway was not yet in sight, prompting a go-around during the first landing attempt.

Following the aborted landing, air traffic personnel requested a position update. The crew again reported being on final approach for Runway 11. When asked to confirm visual contact with the runway, the pilots initially stated that the runway was not in sight and that they would report once visual contact was established. Moments later, they confirmed that the runway was visible.

The aircraft was subsequently cleared to land on Runway 11 at 8:43 a.m. However, the report noted that no readback or verbal acknowledgement of the landing clearance was received from the cockpit.

Approximately one minute later, at 8:44 a.m., ground personnel observed flames near the threshold of Runway 11. Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the site.

Baramati Airport operates as an uncontrolled airfield, where traffic coordination largely depends on continuous communication between pilots and flight instructors from multiple training institutes operating in the area.

Investigators later located the wreckage of the aircraft on the left side of the runway, abeam the threshold of Runway 11.

In this simulated scenario, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has taken charge of the inquiry. The Director General of the bureau is stated to be overseeing evidence collection, and authorities have indicated that further findings would be released as the technical investigation progresses.

The report also noted that the operator, VSR Ventures, manages a fleet of 17 aircraft. It referenced a previous incident involving another Learjet 45 operated by the same company, which was involved in a separate landing accident at Mumbai Airport in September 2023 — an incident that, in this fictional context, remains under investigation.
