Four Soldiers and J&K Police Officer Injured in Kulgam Encounter

Srinagar, Sep 28 — A fierce encounter between security forces and terrorists in the Adigam area of Kulgam district on Saturday resulted in injuries to four soldiers and a senior officer from the Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Officials reported that the clash began after intelligence indicated the presence of armed militants in the region. A coordinated operation involving the Army, police, and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was initiated to apprehend the suspects while safeguarding local civilians. Unfortunately, the security forces came under heavy fire as they approached the terrorists’ hideout.

The injured have been identified as Kulgam Additional Superintendent of Police Mumtaz Ali Bhatti, alongside soldiers sepoy Mohan Sharma, sepoy Sohan Kumar, sepoy Yoginder, and sepoy Mohammad Isran of the Rashtriya Rifles. They were promptly evacuated and are receiving medical care.

In a bid to prevent the terrorists from escaping, security forces have established a cordon around the area, effectively blocking all possible exit routes. Reinforcements have arrived at the scene to support the ongoing operation.

This incident is part of a troubling pattern, as terrorists—thought to be foreign operatives—have increasingly targeted military and police personnel, as well as civilians, across hilly regions in Doda, Kathua, Rajouri, Poonch, and Reasi districts in recent months. Following these ambushes, militants typically retreat into forested and difficult terrain.

In response to these tactics, security forces have deployed over 4,000 soldiers, including specialized Para Commandos trained in mountain warfare, to bolster operations in these challenging areas. This strategic deployment has reportedly led to a marked decline in terrorist activity, allowing for more effective engagement between security forces and militants.

The situation remains tense, with ongoing efforts to neutralize the threat and restore stability in the region. Security forces continue to prioritize civilian safety as they work to counter the insurgent activities.
