The Indian Village Where People Live With Snakes

In a world where most people run away at the sight of a snake, a small village in Maharashtra has become famous for peacefully coexisting with venomous snakes. Shetphal village, located in Solapur district, is known for its unique relationship with cobras.

One of the most surprising aspects of this village is that almost every house has a special space called a “Devsthan” built specifically for snakes to rest. Cobras move freely through homes, schools, and temples without causing panic among villagers. The snakes are neither captured nor treated like pets; instead, they are worshipped and respected as divine beings.

Villagers say that despite living alongside poisonous snakes for generations, incidents of fatal snake bites are extremely rare. They believe the harmony and mutual respect between humans and snakes is the reason behind this peaceful coexistence.

Tourists visiting Shetphal are often amazed to see children fearlessly playing near cobras. Apart from cobras, the village is also home to rat snakes, vine snakes, water snakes, and occasionally pythons.

Shetphal village is located around 200 kilometers from Pune and can be reached via Solapur railway station or from Pune International Airport by taxi. Today, the village stands as a symbol of harmony between humans and nature.
