Hyderabad – A new wave of alarming phone scams has emerged in Hyderabad, with individuals receiving threatening calls from people posing as police officers. Victims are being told that a criminal case has been registered against them and that immediate arrest is imminent unless they disclose their location or transfer large sums of money.
In one such case, the caller reportedly said: “A case has been registered against you. We are arresting you,” using an authoritative tone to intimidate the recipient. The scammers are using fear tactics — including death threats and claims of fabricated criminal charges — to force victims into compliance.
This method of psychological manipulation is causing widespread confusion and panic. With the increasing frequency of these incidents, citizens are left wondering: are these threats coming from actual police personnel? Or are organized crime syndicates masquerading as law enforcement?
Phone numbers reportedly used in these fraudulent calls include 9182365921, 9640655551, and several others — all believed to be part of a broader scam network. Authorities suspect that some of these operations may be linked to sex trafficking and extortion gangs trying to regain a foothold in the city.
Law enforcement agencies have urged the public to stay alert and avoid sharing personal details or transferring money in response to suspicious calls. “No genuine police officer will demand money or threaten arrest over the phone,” a senior official clarified. A probe is underway to trace the origin of the calls and uncover the network behind them.
