Govt Issues Key Advisory to Media Channels

New Delhi, May 10, 2025 — As national attention remains fixed on the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the central government has stepped in with a directive to media outlets covering the ongoing “Operation Sindoor.” The advisory, aimed at maintaining public order and clarity, specifically cautions against the use of sirens and emergency-like audio effects during news broadcasts.

Issued by the Directorate General of Fire Services, Civil Defence, and Home Guards under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the advisory urges restraint in the use of such sounds, citing public safety concerns.

“Frequent use of these sounds can create confusion among the public. As a result, there is a risk that, in actual emergencies, citizens might take such alerts lightly,” the advisory warned.

The move comes in response to growing concerns about the psychological impact and potential misinformation caused by dramatic audio elements in media reports, particularly during times of heightened national tension. The government emphasized that sirens should be reserved exclusively for mock drills conducted for public awareness and emergency preparedness.

“Operation Sindoor,” while details remain officially undisclosed, has dominated headlines and fueled widespread speculation, contributing to a charged atmosphere across the subcontinent. Media houses have been broadcasting around-the-clock updates, with many using high-alert sound effects to emphasize the seriousness of developments.

In light of the advisory, major news networks are now expected to review and adjust their editorial practices to comply with the new guidance. Industry experts note that while dramatization can be a powerful storytelling tool, it must be balanced against the risk of causing undue alarm or desensitization among viewers.

This is not the first time the government has issued guidance to media during a national security situation, but officials say the current advisory is a proactive step to ensure clarity and public trust in emergency communication systems.
