Eight Killed in Shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, Two Suspects in Custody

Sydney: At least eight people were killed and several others injured after two unidentified individuals opened fire at Sydney’s popular Bondi Beach on Sunday, authorities said. New South Wales (NSW) Police confirmed that two people have been taken into custody in connection with the incident.

Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly after reports of gunfire, prompting a major police and medical response in the busy coastal area, which was crowded with locals and tourists at the time of the shooting.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as “shocking and distressing,” expressing condolences to the victims and their families.

“Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives. My thoughts are with every person affected,” Albanese said in a statement released by his office. He also urged the public to follow instructions issued by NSW Police and avoid the surrounding area.

The New South Wales Ambulance Service said multiple victims were treated at the scene before being transported to hospitals across Sydney.

“We can just let you know that we have treated multiple people on the scene and at this stage taken eight people to different Sydney hospitals,” an ambulance service spokesperson told AFP.

Authorities have not yet released details about the suspects or a possible motive. An investigation is ongoing, and police have established cordons around Bondi Beach as forensic teams continue their work.

Residents and witnesses described scenes of panic as people fled the area seeking safety. Officials are expected to provide further updates as more information becomes available.
