Darkness in Homes: Tribal Families Protest Unjust Electricity Cuts

Tribal residents of Z. Jogampeta village in Cheemalapadu panchayath under Ravikamatham mandal staged a unique protest against electricity officials, alleging unjust power disconnections and inflated bills. Holding torches, the Adivasi community organized a demonstration in the village.

Around 60 tribal families, mainly belonging to the Konda Dora community, reside in the village. The ప్రభుత్వం has announced free electricity up to 200 units per month for SC/ST households. However, villagers claim they consume less than 100 units, yet receive excessively high bills.

Citing an example, resident Kota Rajababu (Service No: 115654G375000018) stated that despite an average consumption of 39 units and a monthly usage of 71 units, he received a bill of ₹9,844.80. Similar inflated bills have reportedly been issued to about 40 families.

Villagers alleged that electricity officials warned of disconnections if bills were not paid and have already cut power supply to nearly 20 households. As a result, families are forced to cook using torchlight and live in darkness, with children suffering due to mosquito problems at night.

Despite requests to allow installment-based payments, officials have reportedly ignored their pleas. Villagers also pointed out that the Chief Minister recently announced free electricity for SC/ST families at a public event in Rambilli, but such benefits are not being implemented at the grassroots level.

Tribal leaders, including District Tribal Association President P. Chandrayya and CPM district executive member K. Govindarao, demanded immediate restoration of electricity connections. They warned of protests at the CMD office if their demands are not addressed.
