Hyderabad: Telangana has lost one of its most committed movement leaders and cultural crusaders with the passing of veteran activist and socialist leader Muralidhar Deshpande. His demise has sent shockwaves across political, cultural, and artistic circles, with leaders, activists, and folk artists expressing profound grief over the loss of a man who dedicated his life to the cause of Telangana and its people.
A prominent figure in the Telangana statehood movement, Deshpande remained actively involved from the first phase of the agitation to the final struggle that culminated in the formation of the state in 2014. Throughout his life, he stood firmly for social justice, regional identity, and the rights of marginalized communities.
As Chairman of the Telangana Folk Artists Protection Joint Action Committee (JAC), Deshpande played a historic role in bringing together thousands of traditional folk artists under a single platform. Recognizing the power of culture in mobilizing public opinion, he transformed folk art into a powerful medium for spreading the message of Telangana self-rule. Under his leadership, artists from diverse backgrounds united to preserve Telangana’s rich cultural heritage while contributing significantly to the statehood movement.
Known for his socialist ideals and unwavering commitment to the underprivileged, Deshpande worked tirelessly for the welfare of poor artists, laborers, and weaker sections of society. He consistently raised his voice for those who lacked representation and fought for policies that would improve their livelihoods and dignity.
His contributions extended beyond political activism. He was regarded as a mentor, guide, and inspiration to generations of cultural activists and social workers. Many remember him as a humble leader who remained deeply connected to grassroots movements despite his prominence in public life.

Following the news of his demise, condolences poured in from across Telangana. Several political leaders, social organizations, and cultural associations paid tribute to his remarkable legacy. BRS MLC K. Kavitha expressed deep sorrow and conveyed her condolences to the bereaved family, describing Deshpande as a tireless fighter who dedicated his life to Telangana’s aspirations and cultural identity.
Artists’ organizations and movement veterans have described his death as an irreparable loss to Telangana’s cultural and social landscape. Many noted that his efforts helped preserve and promote folk traditions that became symbols of resistance and regional pride during the statehood struggle.
As Telangana bids farewell to Muralidhar Deshpande, the state remembers a leader whose life embodied sacrifice, service, and commitment to the people. His contributions to the Telangana movement, his relentless advocacy for folk artists, and his lifelong struggle for social justice will remain an enduring part of the state’s history.
