Hyderabad : A tragic building collapse in Hyderabad’s Madhapur area has claimed at least two lives, raising fresh concerns over construction safety and alleged violations of building regulations.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon in Anjaiah Nagar, Madhapur, where a seven-storey building that was still under construction suddenly collapsed. The structure was reportedly being built on a plot measuring around 50 square yards. According to officials, construction work at the site had reportedly been stopped earlier.
Soon after the collapse, Madhapur police and personnel from the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) rushed to the spot and launched rescue operations. Although officials initially believed that no one was trapped inside, rescue teams later discovered a body buried beneath the debris.
HYDRAA officials said they suspected that another person could still be trapped under the rubble and continued searching the collapsed structure. The impact of the collapse also caused damage to some nearby buildings.
The incident has also triggered questions over whether the construction had been carried out without proper permissions. Congress MLA Arekapudi Gandhi alleged that the building was an unauthorised structure and claimed that municipal authorities had stopped the construction for several months before work was allegedly resumed.
He further alleged that cellar construction had been extended towards an adjoining building and that this work may have contributed to the collapse. However, the exact cause of the structural failure will have to be established through an official investigation.
The tragedy has once again highlighted concerns over unauthorised constructions and construction safety in Hyderabad’s rapidly developing areas. Authorities are expected to examine the permissions, structural safety measures and construction history of the building as part of the investigation.
Rescue and debris-clearing operations continued as officials worked to determine whether anyone else was trapped beneath the collapsed structure.
