New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to the victims of the horrific September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States, marking the 25th anniversary of the tragedy. He expressed solidarity with the families who lost their loved ones and whose lives were permanently changed by the attacks.
In a post on social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi remembered the victims and reiterated India’s strong opposition to terrorism in all its forms.
“25 years on from the horrific 9/11 attacks, we remember and honour the victims and stand in solidarity with the families whose lives were forever changed,” Modi said.
He noted that terrorism has claimed countless lives across the world and highlighted India’s long-standing experience with cross-border terrorism.
“As a victim of cross-border terrorism, India has been at the forefront of this fight for several decades,” the Prime Minister said.
Modi stressed that although the nature of the terrorist threat continues to evolve, India’s determination to fight terrorism remains firm.
“While the threat keeps evolving, our resolve and opposition to terrorism in all its forms and manifestations remain unwavering,” he said, adding that India stands in solidarity with global efforts to combat terrorism.
The Prime Minister also shared photographs and glimpses from his visit to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York in 2014.
Remembering a Day That Changed the World
September 11, 2001, remains one of the darkest days in modern history. On that morning, four commercial aircraft were hijacked by al-Qaida terrorists as part of a coordinated attack on the United States.
Two of the hijacked planes crashed into New York City’s World Trade Centre, destroying the iconic Twin Towers and killing thousands of people. Another aircraft struck the Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Department of Defense, near Washington, D.C.
The fourth plane crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew members confronted the hijackers and attempted to regain control of the aircraft. Investigators believe the plane was headed towards Washington.
Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the attacks, leaving a lasting impact on the United States and the wider world.
25 Years Later, the World Remembers
The 25th anniversary is being observed across the United States through memorial ceremonies, wreath-laying events, flag displays, moments of silence, vigils and readings of the names of those who lost their lives.
Community and volunteer activities are also being organised to honour the victims and remember the first responders and others affected by the tragedy.
For many families, the anniversary remains a deeply personal moment of remembrance. Schools and educational institutions are also using the occasion to help younger generations understand the events of September 11 and their far-reaching consequences.
The attacks not only caused immense loss of life but also triggered major geopolitical changes, military conflicts and security measures that shaped international affairs for decades.
