Monsoon Relief for North India: 1,500-km Monsoon Trough Turns Active

New Delhi : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has brought welcome news for people across North India who have been reeling under intense heat and humid conditions. According to the latest satellite imagery, a massive 1,500-km-long monsoon trough stretching from the Bay of Bengal to Jammu & Kashmir has become active. Images captured by the INSAT-3DS satellite show dense cloud cover extending from eastern India to the Himalayan region, indicating that the southwest monsoon is strengthening and is likely to bring increased rainfall across northern parts of the country.

According to the IMD, the monsoon trough is drawing large amounts of moisture from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal into the Indian mainland. During June, the trough remained concentrated along the Himalayan foothills, resulting in heavy rainfall over the region, while the plains of Delhi, Haryana, and Rajasthan continued to experience scorching temperatures and oppressive humidity.

However, the trough is now gradually shifting southward towards its normal position, leading to a significant change in weather conditions across North India. Meteorologists expect widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the coming days.

Monsoon likely to reach Delhi in the first week of July

The IMD has forecast a substantial increase in rainfall across northern states between July 1 and July 4. In addition, a fresh low-pressure area is likely to develop over the Bay of Bengal this week, increasing atmospheric moisture and further intensifying rainfall activity.

As a result, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan are expected to receive widespread and fairly consistent rainfall beginning Wednesday. After enduring temperatures of 42–43 degrees Celsius and severe humidity throughout June, residents of Delhi are likely to experience significant relief with the arrival of the southwest monsoon during the first week of July, officials said.
