Rising Heat, Rising AC Use: Experts Warn of Hidden Health Risks

As temperatures across India cross 45°C, the use of air conditioners (ACs) has surged dramatically, especially in urban areas. What was once considered a luxury has now become a daily necessity. From homes and offices to cars, people are spending up to 20 hours a day in air-conditioned environments.

While ACs provide immediate relief from extreme heat, health experts warn that overdependence on artificial cooling can have serious side effects.

Studies suggest that people who spend extended time in air-conditioned environments report nearly 50% more respiratory issues compared to those exposed to natural ventilation. Office workers in centrally air-conditioned buildings are also increasingly showing symptoms of “Sick Building Syndrome.”

Major Health Risks of Excessive AC Use

1. Breeding Ground for Germs
AC units, especially central systems, can accumulate moisture. If filters and coils are not cleaned regularly, they can harbor bacteria, mold, and fungi. Harmful bacteria like Legionella can spread through air and cause severe lung infections such as pneumonia.

2. Dehydration and Skin Problems
Air conditioners reduce humidity, which can lead to dehydration. People may experience dry eyes, irritation, and redness. Skin can lose natural moisture, leading to dryness, itching, and flaking.

3. Respiratory Issues and Asthma
Lack of fresh air circulation in AC rooms increases indoor pollutants like dust and allergens. Dirty filters can worsen conditions like asthma and chronic rhinitis.

4. Thermal Shock
Moving suddenly from extreme outdoor heat into very cold indoor environments puts stress on the body. This “thermal shock” can weaken immunity and increase the risk of colds and viral infections.

5. Fatigue and Headaches
Spending long hours in closed AC spaces can lead to headaches, fatigue, and reduced concentration. This is often due to increased carbon dioxide levels and reduced oxygen indoors.

Precautions to Follow

  • Maintain AC temperature between 24°C and 26°C
  • Allow fresh air circulation every few hours
  • Stay hydrated by drinking water and fluids
  • Clean AC filters every two weeks
  • Use a humidifier if dryness becomes excessive

Conclusion

Air conditioners are essential in extreme heat, but moderation is key. With proper precautions, it is possible to stay cool without compromising health.
